Orosei, the diamond of Sardinia

Orosei, the historic capital of the homonymous Barony, and now a lively resort town nestled in the fertile valley of the river Cedrino, immediately behind the central-east coast of Sardinia.

Some archaeological investigations, made at the turn of the 70s, have revealed the presence in the territory of Orosei small settlements of the Roman period. Although the area was inhabited earlier, as confirmed by the numerous domus de Janas, nuraghi and nuragic villages in the area, frequently plundered by the inhabitants of endemic for the construction of houses in the town. The first documented dates back to the Middle Ages, 1173, the period when the current town was built.

Orosei was a big center which boasted a commercial port among the most active of the island, the nerve center in the maritime economy of the Western Mediterranean. Passed under the dominion Pisano and then Aragonese, was later sold, in the fifteenth century, the barons Guiso. Absolutely to visit his parish of St. James, speakers, various private buildings and the old hospital in San Antonio and the shrine of Our Lady of Remedy. It must be remembered that Orosei is one of the Sardinian village that boasts a perfectly preserved old town. The center is built around the Piazza del Popolo, Piazza Sas Animas and Piazza S. Antonio and has important civil and religious architecture.

Piazza del Popolo, with its gardens and surrounded by religious buildings, is dominated by the view of the parish church of San Giacomo Maggiore (XII century), with its eighteenth-century façade and 5 domes, covered with terracotta tiles. On the opposite side of the square, the church of the Rosary (seventeenth century), while behind the apse of the parish church is the church of Santa Croce, dating from the mid-seventeenth century.
Along Via Aldo Moro, where is the church of the Souls (XV century), you arrive in Piazza Sas Animas and contained the medieval tower, the only surviving element of the old castle.
Inside the village there is also the important Don Guiso museum, where you can admire a collection of theaters from 700 to today, drawings of the Roman school 1930/1945, ancient books of topic Sardinian clothes/costumes from 1880 to today and furniture and works of art of Siena. Orosei in recent years is starting to become more and more a popular tourist center, equipped with the main facilities that are able to satisfy the taste and everyone's needs. Because of its closeness to the sea, the country's climate is very mild in winter (it is very frequently the almond blossom in early January) and in summer the temperature quite high is dampened by the sea breeze.

THE TRADITIONS
Among the many festivals that are held in Orosei is well to recall at least some must-see: St. Anthony's fire is one of the parties associated with the preparation and lighting of a bonfire in honor of the saint. The morning of Epiphany the inhabitants of the country for the collection and transport of firewood leading into the courtyard of St. Anthony where he was previously planted a tall cypress pole ("su pirone"). On the afternoon of 16 January the woodpile assumes a conical shape with the apex surmounted by a large cross of oranges which is set on fire.

Feast of St. Mary of the Sea is celebrated on the last Sunday of May. The procession starts from the church of St. James and reached the bridge over Cedrino, the statue, the priest and the brothers take their places on the boats of the fishermen and boats infiorate reach after ca. 2 km the small church at the mouth. Meanwhile the rest of the procession accompanies walk along the bank boats.
Feast of Our Lady of Remedy. And the longest holiday (18 days); it speaks of the writer Grazia Deledda in her novel "Reeds in the Wind." The Friday of the first week of September hundred families move to the sanctuary where they live in a room for the duration of the two novenas.

The day of the festival (second Sunday in September), at lunch banquet held on tables within the enclosure of cumbessias.
Sacred functions are announced by the ringing of the bell. A committee of five persons directs the life of this community and care demonstrations civilians. Thanks to the activities of the brotherhoods oroseine, the rites of Holy Week still retain elements suggestive putting well highlighted the popular religiosity. The most spectacular ceremonies are in three processions, which take their name from sos sepurcros on brossolu, s'incontru and taking place respectively on Thursday, Friday and Easter morning. Sos sepurcros (the graves), who are preparing with great care in the eight churches that will be visited by the procession, are the flower arrangements (the characteristic nenneres, dishes made from tall stalks of herbs made germinate in the dark) whose ideal and geometrical center is consisting of the dead Christ.

"Su brossolu" (literally cradle) it is the coffin in which lies the statue is worshiped on the day before the tomb of the Oratory of the Holy Cross. In the procession, to accompany you on brossolu also the two groups called the Mary (Our Lady of Sorrows) and the Cross. S'incontru celebrates the encounter between the risen Christ and his mother. The drama of the events recounted is emphasized time to time by the singing of melancholy gosos (sort of sacred hymns or praise in Sardinian), performed by the choir of the brothers, while the joy of the resurrection bursts, when de s'incontru with the fed prejudice rifle.

The Beaches

The Gulf of Orosei is located in the foothills of the Gennargentu and 40 Km is a continuous series of sandy beaches and coves, a natural masterpiece of the Sardinian landscape.

The Gulf stretches for 18 km in a nice variety of profiles and lands, due to the geological events of the inland. 4.5 km from Osalla in Santa Maria, runs along the strip of sand granite with features dunes large and powerful high from two to three meters bandaged mainly of pine forest and along and parallel pond behind the dunes. At its northern end, in contact with basaltic rock, it opens the mouth of the Cedrino. It takes various names: Osala, avale, Su Barone, Sa Marina, Santa Maria and is accessible by three roads. From the mouth of the river, for about 6 km, the coastline, interrupted only by the beach of Seal Pizzinna, it becomes somewhat jagged, being made up of black basaltic flows beaten and broken by the violence of the sea. It bends sharply to the east up to Punta Niedda, and then returns to the north, where it finally opens to the beautiful cove of Fuile 'e Mare, 250m sandy, crossed at intervals by the waters of the Rio Sa Minda.
Hence the dark cliff continues for another 550m to reveal then, down the tiny cove of Sas Linnas Siccas a narrow sandy strip embedded between the rock wall and the sea: here the dark layers of basalt, still present on the one hand, give way to vibrant pink granite, which is due to the exceptional brightness of the seabed, which here takes on a wide range of hues. The coast is now more move: long, narrow promontories inabissantisi in the sea, but sometimes the simple rocks, delimit a pleasant series of small hidden coves, covered with the usual fine sand and encircled by lush green pine forest typical Sardinian.

It is on this stretch that open the famous beaches of Cala Liberotto, Porto Corallo, Cala Juniper, Sa Curcurica, Biderrosa and Berchida, which gave impetus to the recent tourist installations.

What our customers say?

Some of our customers love us and prove it!

We have been on vacation this summer .... the apartments are well maintained and furnished, complete with everything you could possibly need. Among the things I liked the most is where they are. Close to the sea but at the same time, in a very quiet residential area, where the night you can relax, away from the noises!!!

Elisabetta of Abano Terme (PD)

Wonderful vacation with my family ... I think for a family can be no doubt a perfect choice. Mine is made over to me by my wife and two children, an 8 year old and the other 12. Apart from the nominal cost for the stay, (in 4 in any other facility we spent most of) what we have did not opt for this choice, not only for the apartment itself, and because of its location, it was the complete independence that we could have for our vacation. We felt like home nostro..ma the sea, rather than in Turin. Nice feeling ... also to be able to enjoy without time, all that this beautiful place we offered.

Massimo of Poirino (TO)

Excellent solution for those like me, over the sea, loves to hike! The apartment is located in a beautiful scenic area, where I could go hiking that made my stay unforgettable in this corner of paradise !! We will be back and will choose to stay again, without hesitation!
